Protect Our 7th Amendment Rights

It appears an attack on our 7^th Amendment rights is now imminent in the Arkansas Legislature. We discussed a few weeks back how so called “tort reform” is not a conservative value, but is instead a move to strip us of our Constitutional rights to a trial by jury – something embedded in the Bill of Rights by our Founding Fathers.

SJR 6, by Sen. Eddie Joe Williams, would remove our Supreme Court’s ability to make its own rules (something that was approved by the voters of Arkansas in Amendment 80 to our state constitution) and place it in the hands of the legislature. That means lobbyists could hack away at our rights every session.

Now, it appears that while many Arkansas Conservatives have voiced their opinion about SJR 6, Sen. Williams is now preparing to fill one of his shell bills, SJR 5, with even more harmful language that attacks our rights. The rumor is that his new constitutional amendment will continue to destroy our separation of powers with the rule making change and THEN add in new measures aimed at further insulating lobbyists and others who want to hurt working Arkansans and get away with it.

I urge you to oppose both of these bills and call your lawmakers and ask them to do the same. There’s a big possibility they could run this week. Remember, if we’re going to protect our 2^ndAmendment Rights, we can’t forget our 7^th Amendment Rights either, because if we allow government to chip away at the Bill of Rights, pretty soon we won’t have anything left to fight for!

Join us in saying NO to SJR 5 and SJR 6!
