HB1019: End Special Perk for Elected Officials
Allen Kerr’s HB 1019, to remove one year of unfunded retirement benefits for county and some city elected officials, will be heard in the Joint Public Retirement Committee in Room 130 of the State Capitol at 9:30 am on Monday, March 7th.
This bill simply removes the unfunded additional year that currently only county and some city elected officials receive in the Public Retirement System. This special privilege gives the elected official 2 years of credit for every one year served in the system, more commonly known as the two-for-one benefit. This costs taxpayers $1.1 million dollars each year and NO ONE ELSE IN THE COUNTRY receives this benefit! Another bill, HB 1146 allows them to keep the perk but will make their employers pay for it. One or the other of these bills needs to pass.
All citizens concerned with open and efficient government need to call or email the committee members listed here to ask them to support HB1019.
