HB1322: Fayetteville Finger Redistricting Plan Is Back

April 8, 2011 Action Alerts

Print This Article

The rumor is that Beebe, Hall, and Moore are going to reintroduce this horrible Fayetteville Finger map again as the only available option.

Below is an email received from a legislator asking us to help them fight back this plan. We have never been more tired of the fight than we are now but we know that the conservative legislators must be even more so because they have been in day-to-day face-to-face battle, and many of them need to get back to their jobs. Let’s not let them down. Remember this redistricting plan will affect every issue that any of us are concerned about because, as you can see, we have to have more Republicans in the legislature in order to unblock those Democratic controlled committees that blocked our good bills this time. Please call the Senate switchboard, 501-682-2902, and leave a message for your senator and for a senator on the committee today and also call the House, 501-682-6211, and leave a message for your Representative and a member of the House committee. Fax number to send all representatives a fax is 501-682-3479 – just address the fax to them and secretary gives them to them. Since we are dealing with just one bill, they will get the message loud and clear. Then, send emails to Republican legislators and encourage them to continue to fight.

Email from legislator:

We need to activate the emails and phone calls again to try to encourage members of the House to vote against the infamous Fayetteville Finger redistricting map (HB 1322) if and when it comes up again. Today, SB871, a much better redistricting map than the Fayetteville Finger (what map isn’t better than this monstrosity) was presented to the House State Agencies Committee (the same committee which is chaired by Clark Hall), and an amendment was also presented to clear up one little question on this bill. However, this map was strongly opposed by House Speaker Robert Moore, and this House State Agencies Committee voted down this new map and amendment.

The House and Senate are supposed to convene again Monday to discuss redistricting, but the rumor is that Beebe, Hall, and Moore are going to reintroduce this horrible Fayetteville Finger map again as the only available option. They will say that time is running out, and if we don’t approve this horrible map, then the courts will draw up their own map, which couldn’t be any worse, and will very likely be much better than Clark Hall’s map that is being forced down our throats. This is nothing more than just another one of Beebe’s cheap political tricks to make it much harder for Rick Crawford to win re-election and close out this regular Legislative Session by showing us who is in charge after all.

Can you get as many people as possible to FLOOD the email inboxes and cell phones of every member of the House and Senate, and try to convince them to vote against this Fayetteville Finger monstrosity when it comes up again. Hopefully this will be the last time we’ll need to ask for help for awhile, but this matter is every bit as important as the other times our people were asked to contact legislators.

If the legislature can’t come to an agreement, redistricting will be settled in federal court. I think it is interesting that the Democrats DON’T WANT the federal government to settle this. Is it because they know that their plan is unreasonable, and the federal government plan would not favor the Democrats as much as their redistricting plans would? Note the quotes below by these Democrats.

Moore (House leader) said he’s confident lawmakers will enact a bill. “We are not going to let the federal courts decide congressional redistricting. It’s just a process of continued communication. Hopefully, it will be fruitful at some point in time,” he said.

Senate Democratic Whip Joyce Elliott of Little Rock said she doesn’t believe the Democrats have the votes to extract the bill (Fayetteville finger bill) from the committee. “We got to figure out a way to get off the dime. Everybody has to swallow something that they don’t like. We must, because I think to allow this to end up in the courts would be inexcusable,” she said.

Senate & House Will Convene Again Monday, April 11

Below you will find a list of legislators on the State Agencies & Govt’l Affairs Senate and House Committee that will be voting whatever redistricting plan they come up with. If you can possibly talk to any of these legislators or any legislator in the House or Senate, please do so this weekend and Monday morning because it could be a close vote and could come before both Houses before they are finished. And please send the letter to editor below to all legislators.
