FOIA Petition Meeting in Hot Springs Village
Thursday, March 7, 2024 at 1:00 pm
Message from Sue Flannery:
Attorney Joey McCutchen from Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Jimmie Cavin, a member of the Arkansas Citizens for Transparency Committee, will be here in the Village on Thursday, March 7th to discuss the petition drive needed to acquire enough signatures to put the proposed Freedom of Information Act and the FOIA Amendment to the Arkansas state constitution on the ballot in November’s general election for approval by the people of Arkansas.
They will host a meeting at 1:00 pm in the Ouachita Room of the Ponce De Leon Center at 1101 DeSoto Boulevard for villagers to hear first hand WHY we need to protect the Sunshine Law, known as The People’s Law, from being watered down by politicians who prefer to keep their meetings secret with decisions made outside of the public’s ears and eyes.
The People’s Law came under fire last September during the legislative Special Session when just before the Special Session began, Governor Sarah Sanders requested changes to what is considered to be the best FOIA law in the United States. Governor Sanders was successful in diluting the law at that time. Now the people are attempting to protect the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act from any further damage on a bipartisan basis. Many elected officials would like to see more devastating changes that would impair it.
Because of harmful changes made in the Arkansas Legislature 2023 regular session, it has now become much harder for the public to be able to get an issue on the ballot. Last year our Republican majority in the legislature increased both the number of legal signatures needed and also the number of counties that must be canvassed to get an issue legally accepted to be on the voting ballot. It is now more difficult for We The People to make our demands law.
These two speakers will explain the proposed new law and new amendment. McCutchen and Cavin are here to answer questions from the public. They will tell us what must be done to get these proposals on the ballot so that citizens can vote for them. Copies of the proposed law and amendment will be available to read. Petitions will also be available to sign at this meeting.
If you would like to become a part of the petition run itself as a volunteer, please call Sue Flannery at:
760-604-0804.
Kindly RSVP to the above number if you plan to attend this meeting to help us plan for enough chairs and coffee.
